Legend of the Mist Walker: Magichero

Random Ramblings

I went to see the play 27th Heaven. It was about Kurt Cobain meeting up with Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison at Heaven’s gates. With much confusion—and many jokes about Cobain’s brains being blown out—the three rock icons attempt to coax Kurt into letting go of his former life and passing into Heaven. The play was funny, but left me with unsettling thoughts (which isn’t necessarily bad).

I’ve made little progress on my few months of comic back issues. I haven’t read the Raymond Feist books, but the Magician Apprentice comics are putting me off by using modern slang in a fantasy world. I also read Peter David’s re-visitation of his “X-Aminations” story. Somehow it didn’t have the same effect the second time around.

Whedon is starting to annoy me with the character of Agent Brand in the Astonishing X-Men series. I hate it when a writer tries to build up a newbie character by having them throw their attitude at the main characters. It’s not like Brand is that smart even. She gives away her location to lure enemy warships away from Earth. Why not give away fake coordinates? Genius.

I finally find time to go to the comic book store; now I have to find time to read everything. I’m three issues behind on X-Factor alone. Most of the other series I read, I’m behind two issues. Don’t be surprised if I talk about dated comics on the next posting or two.

I didn’t mention this before, but I saw Pan’s Labyrinth last weekend. One thing can be said about the movie: Guillermo did not hold back when making the violence graphic. After the movie, Jerry made a point about Guillermo being inconsistent in that aspect. I guess Blade II and Hellboy illustrate his point. Hellboy is pretty mild and Blade II is… yeah. Anyway, it’s been nearly a week and I still don’t quite know what to make of Pan’s Labyrinth. I suppose it’s worth seeing at least.

Here's an early update just for your! Seriously though, the real reason I'm posting the comic early today is because I am having problems with my computer. I will try to update the comic while I have it worked on, but don't be surprised if some of the pages come late.

I’ve come across strange cover songs lately. First I heard a Gregorian monk-chanting version of Nothing Else Matters, and now I’ve heard the lullaby version. It’s cool; Rockabye Baby is a company that makes lullabies out of rock songs. And I thought Apocalypica was weird.

Starhunter was a short-lived Canadian space opera that I stumbled upon while browsing IMDb one day. The fifteen episodes from the first season that I found on DVD were low budget, and had their share of storytelling problems, but they were enjoyable. The main characters felt real and there was a strong connection between the characters’ personality and their backgrounds.

For Christmas I received the second (and last) season of Starhunter. I recently finished watching it and I’m a little disappointed. It’s not terrible, but it didn’t measure up to the first season. The special effects were better, but that didn’t compensate for the story. Most of the characters (including the main character) of the first season were jettisoned, and the main plot and the villains of the first season were only brought up in a few episodes. The worst part was that the characters felt flat and didn’t have anything beyond superficial connections with one another.

I had the chance to go to the museum this weekend. I went to a showing of Van Gogh’s work relating to wheat. The Van Gogh’s were supplement with works by other artists. It was a good exhibition despite the fact that there were a couple of Gauguin’s in the mix. I also had to listen to some lady complain that Van Gogh’s sketches were not good because they lacked color. I mean, honestly, if you’re going to a museum shouldn’t you be a little more sophisticated than wanting to see picture with pretty colors. Just a little.

Still, the gift shop was the most interesting part. I’m not sure which miffed me more, the Van Gogh coffee mug with the ear that disappeared when filled with hot liquid or the chocolates molded into the shapes of ears.
