I sat at the small wooden table as she gave me my bit of bread and milk for the evening. The table was practically the only piece of furniture we had in the house. For beds, we used two piles of hay; one for my parents, one for me. “I suppose you don’t intend to wait for him,” she

“I was going to meet Roe at the pond,” I said as I began to eat my meal. “Figures,” she said. “You boys don’t get into
any trouble.” |

“Yes, ma’am,” I said before taking a drink of milk. |

“And wipe your mouth,” she scolded. |
